Backcountry Skiing in Afghanistan

It’s been a while since I’ve made a new post to the website, but today we have something truly worth reporting: Elliott Woods’ story about our backcountry ski trip to Afghanistan is live! The story is in the December issue of Outside Magazine, (check out the online version of War and Piste here). Run out and buy every copy on the newsstand too!

The documentary film I produced is also airing now on Outside TV during their new original series, DISPATCHES. It’s super exciting. Outside TV doesn’t have the episode online yet, so keep checking back for updates. In the mean time, you can watch it here.

The trip was the brainchild of my childhood friend and longtime co-conspirator Elliott Woods. Elliott’s an Iraq war vet turned journalist, and has reported extensively from all over the world with an emphasis on conflict reporting from Central Asia and the Middle East. You can check out more of his stellar work on his National Magazine Award-Winning site AssignmentAfghanistan.org.

Big thanks also to my friends who helped make this happen: Eric Henderson from Dynafit, Gareth Martins and Jeff Fox from Osprey Packs, and Dan Abrams from Flylow Gear. When you’re doing headed in to an active war zone to go skiing, it’s nice to know that at least your gear is top-notch.

Thanks for the film. My sister, who lives in Kabul, just gave me the book by Lauie Ashley and Chad Dear, so seeing you video on skiing in Bamyan was interesting. I hope things improve there, though the overall indicators do not look good.
    Best regards, Alex

Chad and Laurie’s book is awesome, isn’t it? It was definitely a valuable resource for us. Glad you enjoyed the film!
